Staying Healthy for the Holidays

A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that Americans are at their lightest right before Halloween — and at their heaviest by New Year’s. Most people spend the next five months trying to lose the weight they gained during the holidays.

For many, the season becomes a blur of feasting, gifting, and going through the motions — followed by guilt, exhaustion, and a desire to check out until January.

Maybe you’ve told yourself, This year will be different! But between the travel, out-of-town guests, parties, cookie exchanges, and endless to-dos, it’s easy to lose your footing and forget your intentions.

What if, this year, you approached the holidays differently? What if you decided — right now — that this season would be one of rest and renewal, where feeling well is your top priority?

It starts with a simple shift: choosing foods and rituals that keep you feeling light, energized, and deeply nourished. Here are a few of my favorite ways to do just that.

1. Create a Sacred Morning Routine

Some things in life are sacred — they hold us steady when everything else feels busy or uncertain.

For me, that’s having a morning routine that begins with meditation, warm lemon water, and intermittent fasting.
These simple rituals help me feel grounded and clear. They also set the tone for mindful eating and help me stay connected to my body’s natural rhythm.

What’s sacred in your morning? Maybe it’s movement, a good sweat, fresh air, or a few quiet moments in the sun.
Whatever it is — write it down, claim it, and then protect it. These habits are your anchor, especially when life gets full.

2. Eat (or Drink!) Your Greens

Dark leafy greens are the most missing — yet most essential — food group in today’s diet. They’re loaded with minerals, antioxidants, and fiber that support detoxification, digestion, and hormone balance.

Start your day with a green juice like my Lemon Verde, blend up a green smoothie, pile your plate high with a colorful salad.

Greens help create a cushion for heavier, more acidic foods — keeping your energy stable and your digestion happy.

So yes, enjoy your holiday feast — just start with your greens first. Your body will thank you later.

3. Eat With Intention

Food is meant to be enjoyed — especially during the holidays — but how you eat matters as much as what you eat.

Slow down. Breathe. Taste your food. Notice how it feels in your body.

Eating with intention keeps you present and helps prevent that “I overdid it” feeling. Choose foods that leave you feeling light, energized, and nourished — not stuffed or sluggish. And if you know certain foods don’t make you feel great, honor that truth.

You can enjoy the holidays without abandoning yourself.

4. Prioritize Rest and Renewal

Rest is one of the most underrated wellness tools — and it’s exactly what your body craves most this time of year.

Protect your sleep like your life depends on it (spoiler alter: it does!). Practice saying no. Block off time just for you on the calendar.

Resting isn’t a weakness — it’s how your body repairs, digests, and restores balance. When you give yourself permission to rest, you reconnect to your natural rhythm and open space for more joy and presence.

5. The Real Secret to Staying Healthy for the Holidays

Staying healthy this season isn’t about willpower — it’s about awareness.

When you honor your sacred rituals, prioritize whole food nutrition (featuring lots of dark leafy greens), eat with intention, and give yourself time to rest, you move through the holidays feeling grounded, vibrant, and profoundly peaceful.

You don’t need to “be good” or “perfect” by any means.  You just need to stay connected — to your body, your energy, and the version of you that knows your well-being is the highest priority.

So this season… celebrate, stay healthy, and be well.
