If you’ve ever wondered why you can’t seem to make healthy habits last —even though you know what to do — you’re not alone.
One of the most common themes I see in my clients is an ongoing battle with consistency. Whether it’s sticking to a healthy diet, maintaining a regular exercise routine, or managing symptoms like inflammation, constipation, weight gain, or low energy, many people come to me feeling frustrated and stuck!
If you feel as though you’ve tried everything — cleanses, supplements, intermittent fasting, meal prep, meal delivery, tracking apps, gym memberships, HRT, creatine, fill in the blank for the latest health trend, and still nothing changes, please read on and let’s dive into the missing link!
Why Knowing What to Do Isn’t Enough
After decades of health and nutrition coaching, I’ve come to realize that knowing what to do isn’t enough. To create lasting change, we have to have a full understanding about how transformation actually happens.
To be clear, I’m not talking about having more willpower, more discipline, or even a cleaner diet or a better workout plan. This is about understanding the role of the subconscious mind and an awareness of the programs it’s running in the background of your everyday life.
Neuroscientists estimate that only 2–5% of our daily actions are driven by the conscious mind — the part of you that decides to start a new diet, make a grocery list, or go for a walk.
The other 95% of your behaviors come from the subconscious mind — the automatic habits, emotions, and belief systems that have been conditioned into every cell of your being over the course of your lifetime.
Your subconscious mind is influencing your body in more ways than you can imagine — governing your organs, gene expression, microbiome shifts, and immune system function. It’s the silent engine behind your breath, heartbeat, digestion, your body’s chemistry (think hormones!), and even your emotions!
All of this is to say that the subconscious mind is where the real answers lie. This is where we must turn our focus towards if we are to truly create lasting change.
So how do we change the subconscious program? How do we break free from ingrained patterns? How do we learn to stop running on autopilot, to uproot old beliefs and habits, and truly create a new way of being in the world?
How to Reprogram the Subconscious Mind
To create true and lasting change, we have to do more than just change what we do — we must change who we are being. We have to imagine a new identity for ourselves, study those who have achieved the level of health, success, or greatness we’re looking to achieve for ourselves, and then we have to ruthlessly practice showing up as that new version of ourselves consistently.
To break it down, it all begins with awareness. When you start to notice your patterns and choose differently, you begin to interrupt the old wiring in the brain. Over time, with intention, attention, and consistent practice, you begin to reprogram your subconscious mind.
Here are a few powerful tools to begin this process:
- Journaling: Bring awareness to your thoughts and beliefs about health, food, and your body. This will illuminate where you have blocks and resistance. Remember, awareness is the first step to change.
- Meditation: Learn to quiet the mind so you can tune into the deeper wisdom within you. When the mind slows down, the subconscious becomes more accessible.
- Set an Intention: Each day, choose a single thought or feeling to align your energy to — like a North Star guiding your actions. It could be as simple as “I nourish my body with ease” or “I am becoming the healthiest version of me.” Your intention isn’t about forcing change; it’s about aligning your mind and body with the energy of who you are becoming.
You can also explore these simple but powerful reflection questions:
- What does a healthy person do on a daily basis?
- How does the healthy version of me think, feel, and move through the day?
- If I already were that healthy person, how would I show up differently today?
As you begin working with any of these tools, notice any subtle shifts in how you feel or how you spend your time. If it starts feeling more natural to drink water, prep meals, or go for a walk, you’ll know you’re on the right track.
When you learn to work with the subconscious mind, everything begins to shift. Healthy habits stop feeling like an uphill battle. You’re no longer someone who’s trying to be healthy — you simply are.
The version of you who struggled is no longer in charge. You’ve become someone new.
The Mind-Body Connection
This is the essence of how a mind-body nutrition coach differs from traditional dietitians or nutritionists.
When you understand that your thoughts, emotions, and beliefs directly influence your biology — shaping the chemistry of your physical body — you realize you’ve always held the key to everything you’ve been seeking.
