A Love Letter to Your Body

Nayyirah Waheed is a poet and author who has been described as perhaps the most famous poet on Instagram. 

“And I said to my body. softly. ‘I want to be your friend.’ It took a long breath. and replied, “I have been waiting my whole life for this.”

Every time I read this poem, my entire body gets the chills. 

These body chills are just one of the ways my body likes to speak to me. It also speaks to me in the form of tightness in my neck and the feeling in my chest when I cannot get a deep breath. 

Our bodies are always talking to us. The question is are we listening

When you tap into the language of your body, what is it trying to communicate to you?

When you feel out of sync with your body or don’t feel like you’re getting clear signals, one of the most loving and insightful things you can do is write a love letter to yourself. 

Below is an example of a letter I wrote to my body one morning.

Use it as a guide if you wish, beginning with gratitude. 

Dear Body, 

Thank you for all the ways in which you carry me through this life. 

Thank you for your strength and flexibility. 

Thank you for your ability to heal yourself. 

Thank you for the babies you grew, fed, delivered into this world, and breastfed. 

Thank you for all the things you do for me in the background that I don’t ever have to think about. 

Thank you for your grace. 

Thank you for your resilience. 

Thank you. 

Thank you. 

Thank you. 

I love you.

Writing a love letter to your body is such a powerful practice.
