Decluttering

Decluttering 101

As we wrap up the year and look forward to the fresh start that a new year brings, it’s the perfect time to reflect, reset, and create space—both physically and energetically. One of the biggest lessons I’ve shared through the Next Level Detox is this: You can’t bring in the new without letting go of the old. Whether it’s clearing out your home or releasing old habits and mindsets, decluttering is a powerful way to welcome new energy, new opportunities, and a new sense of lightness into your life.

Start With a Plan and 3 Boxes (or Trash Bags)

Decluttering doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Start by choosing a room, theme, or specific area to tackle. Maybe you want to start with your closet, the kids’ toys, or even bigger spaces like the garage or yard. These are the areas we’ve been focused on for the last few weeks, and it’s been transformative. Taking one area or theme at a time allows you to focus, make progress, and avoid feeling overwhelmed.

Once you’ve chosen your space, all you need are three boxes (or heavy-duty trash bags) and a permanent marker. Label your containers:

  • Keep
  • Toss
  • Donate

Once you have your labels ready, here’s the step-by-step process to create more space and flow in your home:

1. Keep

Every cluttered space has items you want to keep and use in the future. Start by identifying what you truly need, use regularly, or value as a keepsake. As you physically move items into your “Keep” box, ask yourself:

  • Does this item serve a purpose?
  • Do I use or love this?
  • Does this bring me joy? (Thank you, Marie Kondo!)

Moving items out of their usual space can help you see them with fresh eyes and decide if they truly belong.

2. Toss

Next, focus on what needs to be thrown away. This includes broken items, outdated papers, and anything you or your family will never use again. Examples include:

  • Junk mail, old newspapers, and magazines
  • Broken toys or electronics
  • Expired pantry items or toiletries

Letting go of the unnecessary gives you that satisfying feeling of a clean, clear space.

3. Donate

Lastly, fill your donation box or bag with items that no longer serve you but could be valuable to someone else. Think about gently used, functional items such as:

  • Books
  • Toys in good condition
  • Small electronics
  • Decorative pillows, throws, or lamps
  • Small furniture or knickknacks

Store your donation items in a dry, out-of-the-way location until you’re ready to drop them off. You’ll be amazed at how light and energized you feel after clearing out your space!

Decluttering one room, theme, or area at a time makes the process manageable and even enjoyable. By following these simple steps, you’re not just clearing space in your home—you’re creating room for new energy, ideas, and opportunities to flow in!
